There are 1521 inhabitants in Bratian. The village is located about 5 km north of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie, by the road leading to Olsztyn, at the point where the Wel river flows into the Drwęca river.
The name of the village, according to undocumented folk records, comes from the name of brother Jan from Sandomierz ( brother John), who built there a fortified castle in the 13th century. The village has a coat of arms,which according to Jan Długosz shows golden deer horns on a silver background.
The oldest mention of Bratian is from 1343.
The village has 1521 inhabitants. There is a church, a historic mill, a school, a volunteer fire department, a car service station and an LPG station in the village council.
